A front row seat on to rolling breakers silvered by the sun, the endless ancient motion soothing as a lullaby.
In the distance, across the bay, the embrace of undulating peaks: the Table Mountain range curving its way down the length of the Cape Peninsula. Cloud puffs like white pillows etched against a blue sky before turning every shade of pink in the setting sun.
As the evening stars flicker up, the pulsing light of Slangkop lighthouse to the south guides the ships rounding the southwestern tip of Africa, and Hout Bay visible as a twinkling diamond necklace strung from the base of Chapmans Peak to the Sentinel.
Warmed by solid timber floors and ceiling beams, it is spacious enough to accommodate 12 guests yet cosy enough for a family of 4 to feel completely at home. With a kitchen that is designed for communal cooking and an open plan living area that makes the most of every aspect. A wall of glass to the west facing the vast ocean vista, doors sliding back for seamless access to the large timber deck furnished for all season living (including a jacuzzi). To the north, a sheltered patio with private pool lushly fringed by indigenous plants.
With so many lovely nooks to hive off in or curl up with a book, and a charming well-maintained garden, Taonga is a house you won’t want to leave. But Long beach beckons – a few minutes and you’re on the broad stretch of white sand that links the surf breaks of this seaside village all the way to the base of Chapmans Peak, one of the most scenic beach walks in Cape Town. Or join the cold water swimmers in De Kom tidal pool, or further south to the Soetwater Tidal Pool, part of the conservancy that protects an area renowned for its wild coastal biodiversity.
Ditch the car keys and shop on foot, from the local village delis, stopping for coffee en route at the surf shop or join the locals at Good Riddance Coffee Co… then maybe pause at that estate agent window… Because if laid-back Kommetjie feels like stepping into another world, it’s one that’s hard to leave.
